Sanibel Shelling -- You will find over 200 varieties of shells on our beaches. Small and miniature seashells tend to be more towards the lighthouse (East) end of the island, larger ones are towards the Captiva (West) end. And Our Secret to finding the best Shells on Sanibel: At low tide make sure to check out the sandbar. During a new or full moon there is sometimes a second sandbar further out. It is worth wading out to this second bar. It is best to go shelling around a low tide when more of the beach is exposed. As the tide recedes it leaves washes of materials at different levels. Shell each of these wash lines for the best results.
